They were sitting in the same spot they had for every meal theyâd shared together. And heâd managed to get more than cake on the tray. Sheâd had one bite of the evening special, which wasnât aging well. But that was to be expected since it was nearly ten at night. He wanted to pick up a fork and feed it to her. âDo you want me to get you something else?â
âNo, this is fine.â She took a little bite of the chicken. âOh.â Hope let out a little sigh and stared over his shoulder.
âWhat is it?â He turned and looked behind him. Her normally all-smiles boss was coming in hot and bothered. Did he get the feeling she wanted him to bugger off? Hell yes. Was he leaving Hope alone with her stern boss? Nope. Not if heâd gotten her into the mess, which he probably had but couldnât figure out how.
âCan I help you?â Everett stood.
Both females glared at him.
âSit down.â Her boss pointed at the chair heâd gotten out of.
âEva, whatâs going on?â Hope leaned away from him. Far enough that his dragon was turning circles inside him. âIs something wrong?â
Eva slid into the chair across from Hope. âI just heard youâre going to one of the captainâs dinners. That you asked to go.â Eva didnât hold back. Her toes had been stepped on, and she was laying it out on the dinner table.
Hope turned to Everett. The speed with which that information had traveled around the ship was more impressive than a dozen paparazzi and television reports combined. She cocked her head in an I-told-you-this-would-happen kind of way. âI didnât ask. Everett volunteered me.â
Her bossâs shoulders relaxed. âOh, thank God. That makes so much more sense.â She yanked on his right earlobe. âWhat did she ever do to you? Huh? Just kept you from being torched by one of the jealous shithead male crew members? Or worse, one of the bridge crew who is out to get you thanks to your little incident. Seriously, dude. Have some respect.â
He rubbed his ear. âI . . .â
âDo you want me to get you out of it?â Eva raised her eyebrows at Hope.
âHow?â Hope scrunched her nose and mouth and became his little rabbit.
âIâll have to take an extra round. Maybe you could watch Roxy for me. If youâd rather not go.â Eva stared off over Hopeâs head, making her demonic plan to rob Hope of her chance to get a promotion.
âSheâs going,â Everett grunted out.
Eva reached across the table. âI would think thatâs up to Hope. Isnât it?â
âItâs dinner. What makes it so bad? Does my cousin serve only bread and water at this fancy dinner?â Everett scoffed.
âNo, the food comes from the premier dining room,â the boss blurted out, barely giving him any attention.
âThe party is held in the bilge, then? What makes it so bad?â He loved a party. None of this made any sense.
âItâs in his cabin.â Hope turned to him, and her leg brushed his.
