They were sitting in the same spot they had for every meal they’d shared together. And he’d managed to get more than cake on the tray. She’d had one bite of the evening special, which wasn’t aging well. But that was to be expected since it was nearly ten at night. He wanted to pick up a fork and feed it to her. “Do you want me to get you something else?”

“No, this is fine.” She took a little bite of the chicken. “Oh.” Hope let out a little sigh and stared over his shoulder.

“What is it?” He turned and looked behind him. Her normally all-smiles boss was coming in hot and bothered. Did he get the feeling she wanted him to bugger off? Hell yes. Was he leaving Hope alone with her stern boss? Nope. Not if he’d gotten her into the mess, which he probably had but couldn’t figure out how.

“Can I help you?” Everett stood.

Both females glared at him.

“Sit down.” Her boss pointed at the chair he’d gotten out of.

“Eva, what’s going on?” Hope leaned away from him. Far enough that his dragon was turning circles inside him. “Is something wrong?”

Eva slid into the chair across from Hope. “I just heard you’re going to one of the captain’s dinners. That you asked to go.” Eva didn’t hold back. Her toes had been stepped on, and she was laying it out on the dinner table.

Hope turned to Everett. The speed with which that information had traveled around the ship was more impressive than a dozen paparazzi and television reports combined. She cocked her head in an I-told-you-this-would-happen kind of way. “I didn’t ask. Everett volunteered me.”

Her boss’s shoulders relaxed. “Oh, thank God. That makes so much more sense.” She yanked on his right earlobe. “What did she ever do to you? Huh? Just kept you from being torched by one of the jealous shithead male crew members? Or worse, one of the bridge crew who is out to get you thanks to your little incident. Seriously, dude. Have some respect.”

He rubbed his ear. “I . . .”

“Do you want me to get you out of it?” Eva raised her eyebrows at Hope.

“How?” Hope scrunched her nose and mouth and became his little rabbit.

“I’ll have to take an extra round. Maybe you could watch Roxy for me. If you’d rather not go.” Eva stared off over Hope’s head, making her demonic plan to rob Hope of her chance to get a promotion.

“She’s going,” Everett grunted out.

Eva reached across the table. “I would think that’s up to Hope. Isn’t it?”

“It’s dinner. What makes it so bad? Does my cousin serve only bread and water at this fancy dinner?” Everett scoffed.

“No, the food comes from the premier dining room,” the boss blurted out, barely giving him any attention.

“The party is held in the bilge, then? What makes it so bad?” He loved a party. None of this made any sense.

“It’s in his cabin.” Hope turned to him, and her leg brushed his.
